>8 bit passive - cs

>16 bit active - C

There was also an 8-bit active matrix (called a "C" because of the
active matrix display, not the number of colors) that wasn't very
common. It could also be had by upgrading a "CS" to a "C" without
also changing the logic board type.

Putting a CS display on a 1MB VRAM board won't help much. The cs
display is limited to about 4000 colors which is nowhere near the
capabilities of the video circuitry w/ 1MB VRAM. I'm pretty sure
that the video circuitry is intelligent enough not to attempt to
display colors outside of the actual LCDs physical range - 16bit
colors will not be available. Putting an active display on a 512K
board will give a 640x480 display at 256 colors. Supposedly, you can
reduce the useable screen size to 640x400 to get 16-bit colors on a
512K "C". Since I don't have an active matrix 640x480 display, I
cannot certify this.

So, displays are interchangeable across the platform (with the
possible exception of the CE display - I'm having some trouble
getting it working on a 512/1024K overclocked CS - go see my website
for details). Moving a CS display up to a 1MB logic board will not
result in any improvement. Moving a C display down to a 512K logic
board will decrease the number of colors in the system palette.

So long as you move the entire display assembly (video cable et al),
you shouldn't have any problems.

But, may I suggest, wouldnt' it be easier just to swap hard drives
and RAM? For one thing, you'll have less disassembling to do. For
another thing, the video cable is extremely fragile (as I already
warned). Even the act of disconnecting it from the logic board, if
done incorrectly, could tear it.

Speaking as someone who has torn down his 5300's more times than he
can count, I would definitely just move the HD and RAM and not bother
with moving displays. It just seems safer and simpler to me. But
hey, everyone has to learn sometime, and hands-on learning is one of
the best methods...

Peace,
Drew
