Thanks everyone for all the info. I did upgrade to 8.1 in the end and the problem went away. I'm going to have a go at copying files from my PC with a CompactFlash card seeing as that seems to be possible.
It currently only has 16Mb of RAM - I think it was only used for running M$ Word beforehand. Might have to buy an upgrade to 64Mb - anyone know a good UK source for these?
