Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear enough.  I would encourage you not to 
disregard this solution because I have the same setup and I've played sound 
for about four years without a single freeze or crash associated with it. 
5300cs, OS 8.6, 48 MB RAM, MV16/EN with latest driver, and the external 
monitor is always attached.  Sound plays through the built-in speaker and 
external speakers.  Maybe my case is just a fluke, but I'm more inclined to 
think the bug was resolved at some point by Focus or Apple.
