So this post actually resolves a couple of issues. I put the MV16/EN in my (defective screen) 5300cs. I removed the display, connected the Focus card to a monitor, and the display lit up (no drivers even!). In 4 colors, I booted from an 8.5 CD.
Way Back(tm) when I posted a question about getting a Norton Disk Lock disk re-initialized. I had tried everything suggested, but the disk just refused to reinitialize. I just now finally managed to skip the "login" and nuked the disk using the 8.5 CD as a boot disk. It worked as described (curiously, Disk Tools floppy wouldn't do it!!!). I'm still confused as to why it didn't work previously... I've now got 8.6 installed (using VM - aren't you proud Dan K?) in 24MB RAM. I installed the 1.0.4 MV16-EN drivers. Since then, I've been playing sounds on my headphones (there's no internal speaker while the display is removed, of course) and haven't had a crash yet. It seems to be working great. I'll test it with some QuickTime movie and MP3s a little later. Next, I installed the ORiNOCO 7.2 drivers. Wonder of wonders, they work as advertised. Imagine that. So now I've got a headless 5300cs that works just fine as an internet gateway! I have no idea what the problem is with my 5300ce, but I'm beginning to suspect it might have something to do with my OpenTransport installation (bits and pieces that I have, others do not - I must have dragged & dropped stuff from another system at some time and forgotten about it). I'll get around to fixing that some day... Anyway, I now recant - The MV16-EN with version 1.0.4 drivers is very stable. If you can live with the monsterous dongle, it is a great ethernet/external video card.
