Yep. My 1400 has been very happy with its Best Data 56K modem and its EtherLink III 3c589C card, as long as I make sure not to sneak one in on it until after it's booted up (or after it's shut down).
I also have been booting my PB1400c/9.1 with an Asante E-net PC card and a Viking 56K Modem PC card. The Modem card never kicks out but the enet card sometimes does. After boot finishes, I just pull the card about 1/2 way out and then push it back in. It is then recognized and I'm back in business.
