Hi Guys, I've just joined the ranks of PB5300 users (and this list). I've got 3 of 'em (1 ce and 2 c) which I'm trying to get "usable" for my 3 kids. The 3 main apps of interest are email, MSWord and internet. The first 2 run acceptably on the 5300, but IE (5.1) is far too slow to be useful. Any web-pages with a non-trivial amount of graphics take (at least) tens of seconds to display (sometimes as much as a minute). I have a high-speed connection, so that's not the bottleneck. I'm running OS8.6 (clean-install) with 48-64M of RAM.
I have a few questions... The first is related to this thread. I've seen lots of posts on the "optimal" OS to run, some of them contradictory. Specifically, will I really get a noticable benefit (i.e. when running IE 5.1) if I back-off to OS8.1? The sluggish finder I'm experiencing is annoying, but I can live with it, so I'm really interested in benefits that impact IE. My second question relates to the usage of SpeedDoubler 8. I've also seen contradictary posts on this topic. The latest seems to conclude that it doesn't make any difference once you move to the later OSs (e.g. OS8.6). Will SpeedDoubler 8 really help me with my primary requirement (if I stay with OS8.6 or switch to OS8.1). Any other obvious (or not so obvious) things I should do to (or with) my 5300 to make it more "zippy" with IE 5.1? And finally, am I expecting too much from my 5300 when I'd like a webpage to download/display in less than 5-10 seconds (on average). I don't expect it to be as fast as my late-model PC that I use at work, but I'm kinda hoping for something reasonaly close. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.
