Since you're dealing with a machine that's about 7-8 years old, what was consider zippy then, is sluggish now. If you haven't already, you should probably open up your Extensions Manager control panel and disable any extensions that are obviously not beneficial to the 5300 (ie. anything USB, FireWire, unused printer drivers etc.). Personally I would go OS8.6 as I haven't noticed a significant difference between it and OS8.1. As for IE5 being slow, you might consider a different browser that's built much leaner and meaner. I would check out iCab. It's a great browser for for older Macs and has just about all the functionality you could need. That's what I load on any Pre-G3 PowerBook. Check it out here: <http://www.icab.de/> They indicate a Pro version will be released but it seems like they've been saying that as long as I can remember. I've always used the free download and have not encountered any limitations for what I need a browser for.
