My recommendation:

ORiNOCO Silver (or Gold) card.
AirPort 1.3 drivers.

That combination will work on Mac OS 8.6 or higher, provided you've got a 2400c or 3400c (or newer).

AirPort 1.3 won't install on the 2400, 3400, or Kanga. You have to use TomeViewer to install it "manually".

<http://www.wwc.edu/%7Efrohro/Airport/Airport12OS86.html> describes how to install AirPort 1.2 on the 3400c using TomeViewer. The directions work for AirPort 1.3, also. However, AirPort 1.3 includes a new file ("AirPort Scripting) which isn't covered by the 1.2 how-to. Unpack that file and place it in your "Scripting Additions" folder in the System Folder.

If you install AirPort 1.3 on your ORiNOCO card equipped 3400c, you'll be able to use my ClassicStumbler and CS Signal Monitor programs.

Once you have the card and software installed, you should be able to select it in your TCP/IP control panel (as an ethernet-type card, and pick Using DHCP Server). Then, in your driver-specific utility, you'd pick whichever access point is close by. You'll get an IP and be online in no time.

Eric:

Most base stations allow you to configure them using a web browser. The AirPort Base Station and some ORiNOCO base stations will work with Apple's AirPort base station setup utilities. Linksys kit is browser-configurable. I'm partial to the Linksys BEFW11S4 (or whatever it's called). As I mentioned last week, though, the WAP11 is probably more what you are looking for.

Peace,
Drew
