With due respect for the numerous knowledgeable responses since then, anyone who is not in the mood for searching/hacking drivers can always get a MacWireless PC Card, which supports Mac OS 7.5.5 and newer, and works well with PowerBooks 3400/2400/1400/5300/190, requiring no modification. It comes with Mac/Win drivers on CD. I bought one for not much more than a Lucent Wavelan Silver Card, both from OWC a few months ago.
Well, it should be noted that it is only the version 7 ORiNOCO drivers that require Mac OS 8.6. Previous drivers work all the way down to the 190 and System 7.5.2. Two of my cards shipped with a CD that included Mac OS drivers (version 5). Later cards do not ship with Mac OS drivers, but they can easily be found at ftp.orinocowireless.com.
I believe that the advantage of AirPort (ease of use, good GUI, integrated into the Mac OS well, *cough* the ability to run ClassicStumbler, etc) far outweighs the relatively more complicated install procedure for the 3400. Really, using TomeViewer is no harder than browsing a Stuffit archive with Stuffit Deluxe or any other tool that can see "inside" a .sit file.
AirPort 1.3 is easily found at <http://download.info.apple.com/>
