Hi Welcome

First when you get the power book use it for a day or so to see if you like
it before deciding to change anything.

Remember opinions vary what is not good for one is perfect for another.!!

Once you have gotten use to the book and like it (which I am sure you will)

Max out the ram and hdd!
Also if you get chance change the cpu with the 540 cpu as it is faster. If
you want to use it to collect email and need a pcmcia cage for the modem I
would suggest keeping the 040 cpu, and not thinking about the power pc
upgrade because then you would need to find a rev C cage and they are like
ROCKING HORSE SXXX AND IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND.

There is a guy on list who has lots of 5XX apps on his web site for battery
reconditioning and the likes, or you could mail me off list and I will send
some , also if you need the modem drivers for either the geoport or express
modem (which ever it has in ) let me know and I can send them also.

But the only thing to really remember is HAVE FUN WITH IT!!

Vicki

I'd love to max the RAM and hard drive, but the cost is prohibitive. SCSI laptop drives apparently are REALLY expensive and rare, and I'm not even sure how much of an upgrade I'd need. As far as RAM is concerned, I could bring it to 20 MB from 12 MB for about $50, but that's still expensive. Like you said, I'll just try using it a bit before I try and change anything.

I didn't think about upgrading to the 540's CPU, thanks for the suggestion. I bet I could find one of those for pretty cheap. I think I'll avoid the PPC upgrades anyway because a lot of times, PPCs are slower than 68040s. My brother has a Quadra 950 (33 MHz) and he had a PowerMac 7100/66 also, and the Quadra was a good 2-3x faster than the PowerMac.

I don't need a modem because I use high-speed internet access through ethernet, which is built into the 500 series. The main problem with this is my dorm room only has one ethernet port, and apparently hubs don't work (although I don't know why not, maybe the other people in my dorm who told me that just don't know what they're doing).

I found a number of good links on Low End Mac to the various battery reconditioning applications. I will definitely want to use these because apparently the battery on this one is still good (for maybe one hour, the owner says). I also found a web page that has a LOT of information about the 500 series, but it's old and talks about the possibility of G3 upgrades from NewerTech, and all the links are broken. The page itself has quite a bit of information though.

Anyway, thanks for your advice!

Luca
