Glad I can help. My original theory was that the laser went out of tune and the knob adjusted the tune. Other people pointed out the knob adjusts the power to the laser and so could eventually burn out. Whatever the case, after retuning several CD ROMs, I never had any problems.
You can also swap out the 12x mechanism with a 24x Teac drive you can get on ebay. Easy as pie.
