The solution to that is to only swap when the machine is shut down. On the 5300 that's not such a big deal (since most people don't have any media bay modules besides the floppy drive anyway). On the 1400, however, that could be more troublesome, what with zip drives, CD-ROM drives, floppy drives, etc.
