This goes back a loooong time. I used to have an 8100AV that had the Sonnet G3 
upgrade (I believe it was called the Crescendo).

In any case, in order to get 8.6 to properly install I seem to remember that 
there is an extension that must be loaded first, otherwise the installer 
choked. It came with the upgrade card. You can make a custom 8.6 boot disk that 
has that extension on it, then fire up the installer.

like i said it was a long time ago, and my memory might not be perfect...
