    I'll rummage around.. But it might take a few days. The .sit file is on
my G3, which is currently down with OS issues ( 9.0 cd in the mail ) and
unfortunatly I don't have any other IDE native macs in the house. (writting
on an 8600/300av).
    But the way it works, is it modifies the id tag for your particular
computer model.. Letting you within reason change it to a diffrent id tag.
There is a text file that provides the list and a step by step what to do..
    I would think chaning it to identify the 1400 as either a 2300c or 3400
would work. 
    However, I still don't really have any idea why it wouldn't install,
given enough ram. Because I looked on xler8yourmac and also on LEM, and they
both say that the 1400 unmodified ( 133-166mhz models ) can run up to 9.0.4.
