In any case, in order to get 8.6 to properly install I seem to remember that
there is an extension that must be loaded first, otherwise the installer
choked. It came with the upgrade card. You can make a custom 8.6 boot disk that
has that extension on it, then fire up the installer.

The card is a complete CPU replacement, and it doesn't need any drivers to function enough to run the computer. The extensions just activate some of the G3's features (like the cache).

I don't know the answer to the original question (why the installer fails), but I'd wager that Hugo is right about the disk being machine specific.

But here's the thing. This topic comes up all the time - the Sonnet extensions for the G3 upgrade and Mac OS 8.6 don't get along. They work OK for some people, but not for everyone. Even Sonnet recommends NOT running 8.6 with their extensions.

Search the archive for more.

If this list had a FAQ, this topic would be in it.... ;-)

Peace,
Drew
