Hello all. I have my PB1400 up on wireless. The link above is great, but
some extra things you need to know about. It took me about a year of trying
different things until I was sucesful.

1) If you have a earler powerbook that uses Card and Socket Services 2, (I
beleave the 190, 1400 & 5300 only) then you can only support one alternate
ethernet network at a time. My PB 1400 supports only Localtalk, IR-Talk,
and only one ethernet at a time. If you install software for a PCMCIA
ethernet card, then remove the software and install wireless software, it
wont work on wireless. You can remove the wireless software and reinstall
the ethernet software and your PCMCIA ethernet card will work again. If you
install software for a diferent brand of PCMCIA ethernet card, having
removed the first brand of PCMCIA ethernet card software, the second card
and software wont work.

With Card & Socket Services (CSS2), The installers write data to the system
file, and the only way to get it to change is to clean install the OS.
Update the OS won't do it. A special thanks goes out to Asante tech suport
for this information. I purchased one of there cards, and they refunded my
money when I could not get it to coexist with wired ethernet. There is a
workaround listed below for this problem.

2) The Appletalk Control Panel in my Powerbook 1400 has the folowing
selections, Remote Only, Infrared (IR Talk), Modem/Printer Port and
Alternet Ethernet. If you have installed a version of AOL dial up software,
you will also have a listing for AOL Link Enhanced. This AOL software does
not affect your ability to add wireless.

3) Not every configuration of software, OS and wireless cards will work. I
was unable to get the software from Proxim/Orinoco for Lucent based cards
to work on my PB1400. The installer would only install the installer log
and nothing else. I tried to manual install the componets, and all it did
was lock up my PB1400. The best guru at my local Mac User Group could not
figure it out, even with a identical PB1400 up on the Proxim software using
a Dell wireless card connecting to the user group wireless network.

4) Try a different card using a Prism2 chipset. The Faralon brand of
Skyline cards, Proxim brand of Skyline cards (Proxim accuired these from
Faralon), and the MacWireless cards all use this chipset. I dont know what
chipset the Asante cards use, so email their tech support if you need to
know. Both the Faralon and Proxim brand of Skyline cards are out of
production, so shop around to find them. Asante and Macwireless are in
production and available.

5) The people who started Macwireless are former Faralon employees. Try
their software and see if it fixes your problem. This tip from Macwireless
Tech Suport.

6) Workaround for both wireless and wired ethernet. I have set up two
PB1400 with wireless and wired ethernet using the following workaround.
Partition your hard drive into 2 volumes and intall system software on each
volume. One partition suports wired ethernet, the other you install the
wireless software. Switch back and forth as you need using the Startup Disk
Control Panel.

Or use a Compact Flash card as a start up disk with the wireless software
installed and keep your hard disk set up with the ethernet wired software.

If you don't need or don't want wired ethernet capbility, then you do not
have to partition your drive, just try a card and software based on the
Prism chipset.

7) Details on PB1400 setup & expiernce.
On one PB1400/117, System 8.1, 16mb ram 750mb hard disk, and Faralon PCMCIA
Wired Ethernet Card. I used a Viking 128mb compact flash card with OS 8.1
and the Skyline v3 drivers. Used the Proxim version of the Skyline card.
Worked great.

On the other PB1400, System 8.6, Sonnet G3/466, and Faralon PCMCIA Wired
Ethernet Card. I use a 1gb Viking compact flash card, with OS 9.1 and
Skyline v3 drivers. Used the Proxim version of the Skyline card. Worked
great.

On both of these machines I use the Proxim version of the Skyline card
(part #473a) for their slim antenna. It does not interfere with the use of
the other PC Card slot. Version 3 of the software works on a PB190 and up
with system software 7.5.5 through 9.1 and 16mb of ram.

On the Powerbook 1400/133 at mac user group, OS 9.0, 64mb ram, and Dell
Truemoble wireless card with the Orinoco/Lucent driver from Proxim. The
owner of the powerbook expierences ramdom freezes while using it on the
user group wireless network. Plans to install OS 9.1 and see if problem
clears up. Do not know if problem is related to wireless software.

These tips may also work for the Faralon version of the Skyline card (part
#473).

These cards are on ebay all the time or you can check out the below links.

Your milage may vary.

Now if I can only figure out how to use my PB1400, dial up my internet
account and set up wireless internet access with the powerbook acting as a
router for wintel based laptops to surf the intenet. Anyone have expiernce
with IP Net Router?
