For a 'user', these days your "several hundred bucks" will buy a Lombard, quite a step above a 3400. For under $200 a maxed-out 3400 can be a very usable PB, for ~$250 a Wallstreet is even better, but as lower-end Lombards regularly sell for ~$300 I'd suggest you start your search there. I've got 'most every 'Book from 100 to Pismo (missing only Kanga) and while I really like my 3400s I cannot say I use them very much at all. Hmm, actually, I use my 540c/167 PPC more than I use my 3400s these days, but my fave is my 500 Pismo. Lombard is the same form-factor as Pismo, with the same lovely 14" screen and uses all the same expansion bay modules. IMO EBMs are what give Lombard/Pismo their overwhelming advantage (even beyond the obvious things like RAM capacity and processor speed.) Lombard/Pismo have options that are simply not available for the 3400/Kanga and Wallstreet serie.
