Inspired by the content on LowEndMac and discussions on this list I decided to try and revive my old 1400cs. It's hard drive died a few years ago and I was too chicken (until now!) to have a go at opening the book up to replace it. I ordered a 20GB Mobilestor HD from MCE Tech (and the all-important bracket) and installed it today. No joy though :-(

When I start up from Mac OS 8 Disk Tools 2 it can't 'see' the hard disc. Disk First Aid and Drive Setup Lite both claim there's no other volume available. (This is the same situation I had with the old, presumed dead, hard drive that came with the Powerbook.) I installed the HD very carefully, used the anti-static strap as instructed. The connector for the HD looked intact, nothing loose or cracked.

The computer won't boot up from CD (I'm holding down commmand-option-shift-delete) so I can't try alternative software solutions such as Norton. In any case I'm coming to the conclusion that this is a hardware problem. Since I can boot up from Disk Tools I assume the processor and memory are okay, so this must be a bus problem, right?

What should my next move be? Is there anything else I can try before I have to take this to a repair shop? Any advice you could give would be gratefully received.
