Sorry to hear about your problems...

With this HD and the previous one not being seen by your Powerbook, I would think it's
some problem other than the HDs. I would try:

1-Zapping the ol' PRAM and see if that sets it right. [Apple+Option+"P"+"R"]
2-checking the connection of the HD ribbon with the HD; then checking the HD ribbon
itself to ensure it is not damaged, or crammed into the little slit inside the HD bay
the wrong way.
3-checking the ribbon's connection to the motherboard itself. I don't remember offhand
how or where it does, but a take-apart manual would help. If you cannot locate one by
this eveing, e-me back offlist and I can help U find one...

LAst night I has a similar problem with a 280c motherboard; after trying all of the
above, I came to the conclusion that the mobo itself was bad. I got a spare 280c mobo,
using the same HD and ribbon, and the HD was seen. So it would seem I may have been
correct(?).

Could be...
Since the HD is not being seen by the 1400 at all, I would not even think the
internal-drive bypass [CMD-OPT-SHFT-DEL] would even be necessary. I find it necessary
to have the CD-rom installed in the drive before startup; either by using a paperclip
to open the drive w/ the 1400 of, OR putting it in & restarting.

Zapping the PRAM is where I would start w/ this problem too. Is the cd-rom spinning at
all? Making any noise?
