My question ... printing from the 3400c to an Apple Stylewriter 1500 ? The 3400c is currently running 8.6. Has both a combination modem/printer port and a combination ethernet/modem port; no quickdraw gx.
How are you physically connecting the machines ?
Looking thru Apple's PB 3400/Kanga (G3) User manual :
Connecting a printer The modem/printer port on your computer can accept either a direct connection (to a printer such as a StyleWriter) or a LocalTalk network connection (to a printer such as a LaserWriter).
To connect a printer directly to your Macintosh PowerBook using the modem/printer port, follow these steps:
1 Connect your printer as instructed in the manual that came with your printer. 2 Open the Chooser from the Apple menu. 3 Turn off AppleTalk by clicking the Inactive button in the AppleTalk section. If you are using an Ethernet connection or a network printer, you dont have to turn AppleTalk off. 4 In the Chooser, select the icon for the type of printer you connected. If you need detailed instructions for using the Chooser, see How do I select a printer? in the Printing topic area of Mac OS Help, available in the Help menu. The printer is ready to use.
Make sure the StyleWriter 1500 extension is in the Printer Descriptions folder, w/in the extensions folder, and enabled in Extensions Manager. Check the Extension Manager on the 6100 to see what QuickDraw (not GX) extensions are enabled, add and/or enable them on the 3400. Are you using the same cable you used w/ the 6100 ? i.e. known good ...
From the Manual's troubleshooting section :
IMPORTANT Make sure that all equipment is turned off before connecting or disconnecting cables.
Check the connections between your computer and the printer Make sure the correct printer software is in the Extensions folder inside your System Folder.
Reset the parameter RAM. Then select the printer in the Chooser and try printing again.
If you are using a printer connected directly to your computer, make sure AppleTalk is inactive, or the Printer/External modem port is not selected in the AppleTalk control panel.
If the printer is connected to a port, make sure the correct port is selected.
Nothing happens, or an error message appears, when you try to print ...
There may not be enough memory for printing. Try the following:
Quit the program immediately after sending the Print command. Increase the amount of memory that Desktop PrintMonitor uses. (Locate Desktop PrintMonitor in the System Folder, select it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and type a larger number in the Preferred Size box.)
Reduce the amount of memory the program uses.
Open the current printer (its icon has a bold outline) and check for status messages. Reinstall your printer software. Reset the parameter RAM.
I have checked the support info from apple and cannot, as they suggest, set the modem to either "normal" or "external". Have tried different combinations of appletalk settings, turning on and off different extensions, all to no avail.
I have the original software from the printer and the manual which repeats apple's directions printing from a 3400c. Apple support suggests not installing the original software, rather using the driver that comes with the later OS, which I did. However, I had the same problem using the original software with 7.6. Now, if I want to try the original software, I get an error that the OS must be 7.6 or later ! :) and it won't install...
When I try to print to it, the Stylewriter will switch from "sleep" to "on", but always fails during initialization. The message is generally that there is a problem communicating, be sure it's plugged in. It works on an old 6100, so it's not the printer.
You may have checked all of this by now, hope there's some help in this, Jerry
