The minimum allocation size in HFS is a function of the maximum drive 
capacity, not the size of the data.

Therefore, for really huge drives, allocating even a one byte file 
actually results in allocating a really huge file, thereby wasting lots 
of space.

HFS+ changed that, and allows the mimimum sized "allocation unit" to be 
more a function of the actual size of the data than a function of the 
size of the drive.

Also, HFS+ supports almost unlimited sized drives.

IIRC, 8.0 supported neither Slaves nor HFS+, 8.1 supported Slaves (but 
only if one downloaded Drive Setup 1.6.4, which was NOT included with 
8.1) but not HFS+, and 8.5 supported both.

Anyway, 8.5.1 came with everything you need for Slaves and HFS+, and with 
8.6 everything finally worked pretty well.
