Greetings. Hmm, help me out here with a clarification. You said, "You
might give the Samsungs a try." But this is not an experiment. I need
to KNOW that the chosen drive WILL work on my PB2400c. If most new
drives are ATA-6, but I need ATA-5 compatibility, how do I go about
this? Although I do not understand the technicalities, your comment
about "will not auto-negotiate down to ATA-5" was not very
encouraging. What do I need to know here?
Thanks!
Gary

Subject: Re: Will just about any 2.5", 5400RPM ATA hard drive work in
PB2400c?
I know I need a 2.5" ATA drive, and someone suggested
that I look for 5,400 RPM. I'm looking at some on newegg.com. New
name brand 40GB notebook drives are running around $60-70. I don't
see any distinction being made between PC and Mac, so I assume this
doesn't matter (they are labeled ATA-6, is this right?).
Most are ATA-6.
I use the 40 GB Samsungs from Newegg.com in my Wallstreets.
But ... the Samsungs will not properly auto-negotiate down to ATA-5 in
Lombards and Pismos [ * ] . Only a few drives will, actually.
Late Hitachi/IBMs and late Toshibas won't properly auto-negotiate,
either.
I believe this is a quirk of the Lombard's and Pismo's ATA controller
chip, not a defect in the drive, as so many drives will not work in
Lombards and Pismos.
You might give the Samsungs a try. They are inexpensive, very quiet and
very low power, plus they have all the bells and whistles of their
competitors (GMR headsm FDB motors, etcetera).

[ * ] About the only large capacity drives which will work in Lombards
and Pismos are the 5K80 series if Hitachi/IBM drives, which are now
obsolete, and their Hitachi/IBM replacements will not work in Lombards
and Pismos.
