>Although I do not understand the technicalities, your comment
about "will not auto-negotiate down to ATA-5" was not very encouraging. What do I need to know here?

The Lombard and Pismo G3s, which are relatively recent machines, and are
PCI-based, compared to your relatively old, and NuBus-based 2400

You must be thinking either of the 1400 or 2300. The 2400 is definitely PCI based - it's a cousin of the 3400. It can even be modified to be CardBus compatible!

There are several vendors which support older PowerBooks, most
particularly 1400s, but also those up to the 3400 (last 604)

There was never a 604 based PowerBook. The 603e was all PowerPC PowerBooks before the G3. (However, Vertegri Research had plans to make a 604e, Tanzania-based "portable" clone. I've never seen one in the wild. <http://www.paulgossen.com/vertegri/>)

For the record, I've run an IBM/Hitachi 40GNX 40GB hard drive in my Wallstreet and Pismo (both of which are OT here) with no problems whatsoever. I don't know if this qualifies as one of _your_ so-called "newer" drives, though...

The message that Gary needs to take away is that since his PowerBook 2400c is _not_ a Pismo or Lombard, it will work fine with any hard drive he can put in it. In fact, the 2400c (and the 3400c) is ATA-2. That means it can operate in PIO Mode 4 and/or multiword DMA yielding speeds as fast as 16.6 MB/s (though I think this is a little optimistic for a PowerBook of that vintage). 11.1 or 13.3 MB/s are probably more realistic even if still only "theoretical."

Peace,
Drew
