Reinstall the drivers after setting up the drive and having it going. 
Reinstall the drivers also after installing OS 9.2 or whatever. Or 
just reinstall drivers and software in random order until it works.

This worked for me. For some reason it seems to matter what order you 
put things together in. Eventually you hit on the magic combination. 
If you are a patient person, keep track of everything you do and do 
it differently each time. Otherwise, just flail. I figure it will 
work eventually.

Apple site has latest Firewire drivers.
