[snip] Wow, it's been so long since I configured a Mac for a modem, I had nearly forgotten the most fun thing about modems: Initialization strings! Mac author Adam Engst writes wisely: "Since the first edition Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh came out in 1993, I've realized that many Internet connection problems stem from incorrect modem init strings. This is not surprising, given the fact that modem manuals generally read as though they were translated literally from an obscure dialect of Swahili." You might double-check your init strings at his web page: http://www.tidbits.com/iskm/modems.html In some dialup apps such as FreePPP, I believe there is a field where you manually enter your modem's init string. The Remote Access Control Panel has a pulldown menu ( RemoteAccess | Modem ...) where you select the modem. Probably you already knew this, but just in case ... > I asked someone to set it up but neither of us had any success. Could be shorted pins - I hope. Lighter fluid wouldn't be my preferred solvent. Isn't it a bit greasy? Seems like it would leave residue. Rubbing alcohol or acetone would be a cleaner solvent, I think, that would evaporate nicely.
