A lot of people don't realize the first Mac OS X will run on a 604 CPU
without a hack but it is basically a beta version and has some
problems..... but it works.

And greg is correct on the G3/G4 issue. OS X of any flavor will run on
a G3, even a 233MHz iMac. I have Panther (10.3.7) running on a 300MHz
B&W and it runs better than Jaguar.
