It saddens me that our ecomony focuses so heavily on

I feel the same way about wimminfolk.
Who needs the latest model when there's plenty of life left in an older unit ?
All they usually need is a ram boost and maybe a hard drive upgrade to handle
the older software, which, while it may not have all the bells and whistles of newer
versions, remains limited by the users' hunt and peck speed anyways ?

Same goes fer them newfangled laptops.
Although easier to lug around, they're a lot more fragile, and the moment
you turn your back some low-life has run off with 'em.

I've fixed up plenty of older computers to give away to kids and computer illiterate folks afraid to commit major coin to something they know will be worthless inside of 18 months. The downside, of course, is the inevitable phone calls (always from the older folks - the kids just keep playing around 'til they figure it out themselves) asking, eg., how to find a document lost in the innards of the hard drive. Long ago I stopped giving away anything less than a PowerCurve simply due the aggravation of giving an instruction and then waiting, waiting, still waiting on the line until the next instruction could be given.

A while back a pinko friend of mine was collecting older computers and equipment to send to the poor folks down in Cuba (Canada being, to all intents and purposes, Cuba north). He had amassed quite a collection of goodies, and was quite proud of himself, until informed that they only wanted units that would run OSX.
Go figure...

Cheers...Michael
