I've installed OS X 10.2 on a PowerCenter Pro. It had a PowerLogix ZIF daughtercard with a 333 MHz G3 I stole out of my beige G3 when I upgraded it (for the second time - it was originally a 233 Rev A). I actually got the card running at shy of 400 MHz overclocked with no problems. I think the system bus was running at 60 MHz, which the Pro's can do no problem, but not the regular PowerCenters.

I installed OS X using XPostfacto in it's very early alpha or beta days, so there were some interesting issues along the way. I used my Tempo ATA/66 card, which worked great performance-wise, unless you played audio. This is because those cards require a special utility in pre-G3 Macs to slow down the clock speed to get audio to play without stuttering. Since the utility is only written for OS 9, you can't do the same in X. I used a Radeon 7000, which works excellent with OS X.

This was actually the first system I browsed the iTunes Music Store with. It had just been introduced the day I finished setting up the system. Of course, the audio sounded awful, skipping and popping. Overall, the system performance was not very good. Usable, but not fun. I also had a weird issue where System Update wouldn't work. I think that was an early XPostfacto issue that you likely won't run into, now.

That project lasted about two weeks before I decided I'd rather have a usable OS 9 system than a crappy OS X system. I already had my beige G3 running a 500 MHz G4 upgrade, which worked much better.

I recently retired the beige G3 and put its upgrades into a B&W G3 I got for $50 on eBay. You wouldn't believe it, but the speed difference is unbelievable. And you don't need XPostfacto to install OS X.
