Thanks to all who have replied to my posts about OS X on a PowerCenter
150.
I think what I'm going to do is watch the ebay prices for processor
upgrades, Radeon 7000 cards and RAM upgrade for my PowerCenter. As
well, I'm going to watch the prices on the B&W G3's. With shipping
factored in, I'll probably go with the cheapest solution since this is
just going to be used as an OS X backup server with occasional work in
OS 9.
Rick has got me interested in the B&W G3 option but I still have the
urge to tinker with the PowerCenter to see if I can actually get it
running OS X satisfactorily.
You know XpostFacto has come a long way. It is at version four now, and
its really a point and shoot affair. You'll need at least a 300MHz G3
but you can pick those up for dirt cheap now on eBay. Also a Radeon
7000 PCI graphics card will greatly enhance your enjoyment. Those two
things shouldn't set you back more than about eighty bucks, and 128 meg
sticks for these machines are like 17 bucks or even less nowadays. The
Radeon PCI card, the most expensive part of this upgrade, can also
follow you to a Beige or B&W G3 so you don't lose that investment
later.
Assuming you have a copy of 10.3, I say go for it. Just back up your
data first, and make sure you got about five gigs of free space (OS X
is
a hog for space, especially with its many updates) and it should go
fine. If not, you'll end up back in 9 with a faster box and more
memory :-)
Bolton
Bolton, thanks for the words of encouragement for getting the
powercenter into OS X.
