My understanding of how email works is that a single message is created and recipient addresses allocated to it, then it is sent out; the mail server then sends that one message to each of the addresses. The sig is part of the message, not added by the mail server.
Surely a per-addressee sig would require a different system; in the example you gave, you would type one message and address it to Persons A- E, but then the email client would have to sub-create three versions of that message -- version 1 having sig 1 applied and addressed to persons A & B, version 2 having sig 2 and addressed to persons C & D, and version 3 having sig 3 applied and addressed to person E. I suppose that it is possible but then surely you would have three messages in your out tray -- if they were automagically recombined into a single message after sending, then what sig would appear on the saved message? As I say, this is my understanding of the workings of email; however, I fully acknowledge that my understanding of such things is Shakey, Shabby and Slipshod. I'm fairly certain that someone else will chime in and point out that my statements mark me as an ignorant buffoon, and that Eudora/MailSmith/whatever has had the variable sigs feature since the dawn of email.
