This is indeed bizarre.

On this note, however, it would be great if PM had a preference for
specifying the quote string.  I would like to amend it to include a space
("> "), since the text-butted-against-the-greaterthansymbol is visually
unappealing when reading such text without benefit of quote-colourization.
