Yes, although altering the name back to whatever it originally was in the
Attachments folder will re-establish the link, so it's not permanently lost. 

I've found that the most trouble-free way to deal with all attachments,
in any email client, is to make a copy of the attachment and work on
that, leaving the file that the email client knows about untouched. That
way if you ever need to go back to the original document (to send to a
colleague or something like that), it's always easy to locate the exact,
unsullied file.
