On Mon, Oct 20, 2003, Michael Lewis [EMAIL PROTECTED], invoked powers within the internet realm, to proclaim ...
>cheshirekat sez: > >>So, considering ALL the above; why did PM add this "Douglas" character >>AND replace "cheshirekat" [EMAIL PROTECTED] ? > >Because CTM purposefully wants to make just your life difficult, apparently. > >Did you try deleting the offending spam mail, emptying your trash, and >then compacting your index? It's my understanding the dropdown is >populated by the address book and other emails you have with addresses >that may not be in your address book. Get rid of the email (compacting >ensures this) and does it not go away? > The conspiracy theory isn't one that I would waste my time accepting. I've never thought CTM intentionally planted bugs to frustrate me or make my life difficult. But, I do think CTM wasn't aware of some of these bugs. Which is why I wanted to be clear when I responded with, "My preferences were, I did this, and I did that, etc." Yes. I deleted the spam immediately. I have no reason to keep any spam for a period that exceeds the amount of time it takes for me to observe and determine that it is spam. I frequently empty the trash; I empty the trash just before I retrieve email to get rid of legit email I no longer wish to keep, and just after retrieving email to get rid of the spam that comes in. I manually retrieve my email, instead of retrieving by schedule. When I'm home, and the computer is connected to the internet, I manually check my email approx. every half hour to an hour. I regularly export my email to a FileMaker Pro database that I created via AppleScripts that I created. I do this once or twice a week, so that at any given time PM is only holding a maximum of about 500 messages. After which I compact the database and index because at most there are a couple day's worth of emails remaining in a few folders - most folders are empty. The spam I received that PM picked up had been received two days in a row, including the day the problem occurred. I did not compact my database on those two days. I would consider it extreme measures to have to compact my database each time I received and deleted spam. I'm not that anal. If that's what it would take to prevent problems in PM, then PM is definitely not the email program for me. I haven't received other spam with my email address in the "from" field since then, so the problem hasn't presented itself to know that it will not happen again. Other than making sure that the "address history" feature is disabled and keeping with my routine of exporting my messages (done last night) I see no reason that this should have occurred in the first place because the correct email address is in the Apple Address Book, so I have no reason to trust that it won't occur again. Until I decide upon another email client to use, I'll keep a careful eye on what's going on with my email addresses in PM.
