Hello
This is my first post after having been a 'lurker' for some time and I would
like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to everyone.
My name is Quentin and I am a photographer who specializes in architectural
photography and editorial interiors. I use a Horsmann Digiflex II with a
Jenoptik Eyelike 16 shot back tied to a G4 powerbook. Having been a user of
PC for 15 years my knowledge of the Mac is very basic and any suggestions on
where to learn more on OSX (whatever version it might be!) would be
appreciated. I live in the Dordogne, France having moved out of London just
over a year ago. I still work in the UK and consider my move to France as
one of the best things I have ever done!
With regard to recent posts on Mac & PC's , I also have a Dell Inspiron
which I originally bought when I was planning to use a Light Phase back and
I would warn potential PC notebook purchasers that many of them (including
the Dell) do not have 'true' Firewire. Proper Firewire, according to the
IEEE1394 protocol, included a power supply from the notebook to the
appliance, thereby negating the need for a separate power supply for the
device. Unfortunately many manufacturers have decided on behalf of the
consumer that we don't really need this and are therefore selling a 'pared
down' version without power. Check this out before purchase, rather than
finding out some time later as I did - no refunds were offered.
On the insurance issue, I too can recommend Glover & Howe. I have been with
them for quite a few years (10+) and have always found them very helpful,
but my policy does have a 'left unattended in the car at night' exclusion.
I would also like to know what substance members recommend for cleaning
notebook screens and flatbed scanners.

That's all for now
Regards
