are you using a proper printer profile made for that printer? It sounds like
you are not, in which case it's hardly surprising you are where you're at
currently. The Epson canned profiles that are supplied have always been
heavy on the ink and Epson's own printer colour management is v basic.
It's great that you calibrate your screen, but imho, you need to be
calibrating and profiling the printer too, otherwise getting good consistent
results is pure luck and guesswork.
Contact Neil Barstow who made a profile for my 5000 - it works a treat.
If I've got the wrong end of the stick completely and you are already using
a printer profile made specifically for that printer/paper/ink combo, accept
my apologies for teaching you to suck eggs and ignore me...
