To know where the metal sleeve should be precisely you need to remove the scanner cover (two screws at the back and then push upwards) and then also remove the front plate (take those two springs off on the sides). The sides on the bottom come of just by pushing them out, theres only a magnet holding them in place.
Now you look from scanner feeding area upwards to the lens and the CCD is above it and you should see the entry windows of the CCD. With the scanner turned on you can see how the light hits the CCD as a thin line. This has to be very precise, straight and in the middle of the window. Mabey its enough just to turn the bulb slightly, try that before you try moving the metal reflector, its very easy to break the bulb.
When you have aligned the strip of light hitting the CCD your problems should go away.
