Dear Listee's,
I have recently had a very 'strange' experience with registering a domain
name (for a digital photography business) or two with 123-reg.co.uk. It
could be totally coincidental but... I noticed that about 12 hours after I
had registered a co.uk domain name with them, all the other versions (i.e.
..tv etc) were also grabbed. They were free before I had registered the
co.uk domain name...
Now it occurred to me what an excellent business model it would be to set up
a Hosting Company that listed all searches and registrations and then
registered the ones that sounded interesting and / or where the purchaser
only bought one of the many permutations of said domain name.
So I decided to experiment : I went back to UK2 and registered another co.uk
domain name very similar to the first one I had registered with them. Before
doing this I double checked that ALL possible permutations of .com names
were available. They were.
And the same thing happened again ! Within 12 hours all the other .com
versions of the domain name I had registered were taken, once again.
Coincidence ? I think not.
Has anyone on the list had any similar experiences.
Is this standard practice within the industry ?
Thanks.
