Could you enlighten us to the manufacturer of your rip?

Are you saying that you can achieve the same 'photo-quality' look and feel
using the rip, as you get when printing through the Epson driver? (ignoring
the Epson's problem with shadow detail)

I understand that the Epson driver pretty much gives up in the darker
tones... my question is more to do with the coarseness of detail in the
final print when using your rip.
