I saw the device in mid 2000 here in Seattle being shown at a digital imaging get-together. The claim at the time was that it would fit into any 35mm camera system, since it was basically the size and shape of a 35mm film cassette with its leader exposed. The big drawback for any kind of serious imaging was the small CMOS sensor - and resulting image size and quality. You may recall that early CMOS sensors wern't up to the standards of the current crop of CMOS based cameras.

It came with a small stand - not unlike a compact flash card reader to down load the images (I think it held 25 or so). Just download and reload - you're ready to go. At least that's the way it was supposed to work.

Still, I was intrigued enough to want one - the price was pretty reasonable given prices for digital imaging products at the time. The rep couldn't sell one at the time, nor could he refer me to anyone who could, but it was coming to a theatre near you soon.

This was the Imagek EFS (Electronic Film System) originally shown at the DIMA conference early 98. It was subsequently shown over the years at a number of exhibitions, always with an imminent commercial launch date. As time went by, it's relatively low resolution (as far as I recall it was sub megapixel) and the fact that there would have to be specific versions for different camera platforms, made it less and less interesting.

I seem to remember it went through a name change - or even a company change. I haven't heard any mention of it for quite a long time now.

An interesting concept but I would imagine fraught with technical and practical implementation problems.
