Some of my CD backs up, 2 years old, don't like my new (48 speed) machine. I have to read them on the old machine (2 speed) in an old computer and send them to the new machine to rewrite them. Have we got to archive the old cd writers as well?

There is no real reason why they shouldn't. As a safeguard, you can always
duplicate your CD-Rom archive every 10 years or so, and in 10 years time we
will in all probability have better archival media than we have now.
