My usual way of solving this (prooving it to them) is to send them a copy of
the Pixl Test Image and have them convert this and proof it. I have a set of
Lambda prints [Shameless Plug ahead] available for purchase
(www.pixl.dk/Profile - Verification Kit, also available from
www.neilbarstow.co.uk). These prints are a guaranteed correct representation
of how the digital file should look.
I then compare my Lambda prints (of which I also have good quality offset
print, Cromalins etc which are very similar) with the proofer at hand. When
the proofer is different from my samples it's easy to show...

It offers a starting point for criticizing a "professionals" proof'er.
Just wanted to say how excellent this file verification kit is: Personally I find it reassuring to see a smack on dead match that I as a photographer can relate to, as a back up to the electronic wizardry our two top end calibrators and Optical provide for the PC's and Macs. Yes, both platforms do match spot on!

Cheers
