How about creating a duplicate layer from the background, and use Levels and/or Curves to adjust that image so the edges match the center of the original. Then create a layer mask - Layer>Add Layer Mask>Reveal All. With the mask layer selected, use the Gradient Tool (select Radial Gradient in the Tool Bar) to draw a gradient starting at the center and out to near the edge. Might take some trial and error to get it just right.
