If you've got a Mac you can rename files via the finder with a shareware
utility called "A better finder rename" (I think they need a better program
rename). You can create droplets with a particular name change instruction
and drag files on to them. I believe this can rename all files in a folder
in sequence; you should read the info at:

 http://www.publicspace.net/ABetterFinderRename/

I heard about this via a photographer in Chicago called Andrew Collings.
This is his post, related to workflow (which I have adopted as a way of
deleted unwanted 1Ds TIFFS - with the exception that I backup the TIFFS
AFTER deleting the no-hopers):

Richard
I know exactly what you mean about workflow. But the RAW+small jpeg is a
glorious concept! I shoot about 1400-1800 images per wedding and here is my
workflow:
(obviously make several backup cd's before any of these steps below!)
(I use Mac OS X and I don't know if windows has this feature)
1. in the find box of my folder containing all of my RAW and small jpeg
files (you should copy all of your small jpegs and RAW from all the cards
into one big folder), I enter: .jpg
This makes the computer find all my small jpegs. I move these to a folder
named "(jobname) sm jpegs"
2. I do the same for .tif and move those to "(jobname) RAW tifs to edit"
3. View all sm jpegs in Photo Mechanic. Tag the ones I want to keep.

(I usually now copy my "(jobname) sm jpegs" folder. Photo Mechanic will copy
all the tags too.

4. Select the tagged and move (NOT COPY!) to a folder named "(jobname) sm
jpegs picks"
4. Rename the "(jobname) sm jpegs" folder to "(jobname) sm jpegs rejects"
5. Use A Better Finder Rename application to rename all of the "(jobname) sm
jpegs rejects" files .TIF instead of .JPG. MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS TO THE
REJECTS AND NOT THE PICKS!
6. Move the "(jobname) sm jpegs rejects" files with the fake .TIF suffix to
the "(jobname) RAW tifs to edit" folder. The finder will ask you if you want
to replace them? Yes, you do.
7. Sort the "(jobname) RAW tifs to edit" files by size and remove all the
small ones (the sm jpegs).
8. You now have the edited RAW files. I usually then open those in
PhotoMechanic because I shoot with 2 1D bodies and photo mechanic will sort
by capture time. I rename them all "(jobname)_001" etc. I then open that
folder in the RAW file utility from Canon and do my white balance/exp comp
work.
Hope this helps.

And so do I.

Regards

Richard
