I do the same thing. I know all about the "having control" thing. But at the
end of the day, for the type of magazines I work for, I have no control or
contact with their Repro houses and so have no control at that stage. Also
using this method allows the Repro house some control and allows them to
make a living, charging the client for the conversion. It also places the
blame on them if they get it wrong, not on me. I supply my images along with
a set of Prints, so that they have a reference point to refer to. On the
last couple of jobs I've done for Wedding & Home the results have been
superb. The pictures in the current issue are spot on, the colours vibrant
and correct to the originals. I couldn't ask for more.

Personally I wouldn't pursue it. Sure you could charge for it, but do you
think your client will let you? Clients want to save money, if they think
your doing it, they'll just see the pounds that they can save at the Repro
house. The Repro house will also see the pounds that they are losing because
of this. I hate to think of what they will do to your images when they get
them? Might alter them a little perhaps, so that they look off colour? Then
they can get the work brought back to them? I wouldn't blame them, why
should they loose out. I agree in a perfect world we should have absolute
control of our images, but it isn't a perfect world and never will be. The
best I hope to achieve is to be able to output a print myself, that is so
close to what the final will be, that I know everything is correct from my
end.
