Feeling too lazy to write a personal reply (sorry) but here is a copy of a mail I sent someone this week, on exactly this topic. For OS9. As others have mentioned in OSX this is a doddle to sort out. ---------------------- You have not lost the files just because they have the wrong [File Type] or [Creator] code. Each file on a Mac system (OS9) has a File Type + Creator code. The File Type could be JPEG, but the creator code is the one that tells the file which program opens that file. A selection of Creator Codes 8BPS = Photoshop File 8BIM = Photoshop File There are many more. This creator means that when you click on this file it knows to open that file with Photoshop. Its not the JPG extension that does this, its the creator code. This is why some JPG's open in Quicktime, some in PS, some in other programs. This is very different from a PC, which does not have creator codes. OSX also works differently, it does not really use the creator code either. How to sort it out. Control Panels/File Exchange PC Exchange Tab Have both options ticked (Map PC extensions + Open unmapped files) Scroll down to jpg. Select jpg (probably it currently says quicktime next to it) select change. Now choose PS as the application to open it with, click change again. At the same time I'd change jfif, jpg and jpeg to all open with PS. Do a restart. This should now hopefully mean that when you next download a jpg file off a camera/card, it should be automatically recognised as a PS file not a quicktime file. Files that are already recognised as Quicktime files can be changed back (as can ones that say they are documents) by using a useful utility called File Buddy (worth the money of you're using OS9) This will enable you to correct the file types/creator codes very easily. In OSX this problem no longer exists and its extremely easy to assign which program opens which file types. Yet another of OSX's small but major advantages over OS9. Hope this is clear, if you have any questions feel free to ask. regards Paul -- Paul Tansley Fashion & Beauty Photography London +44 (0) 7973 669584 http://www.paultansley.com =============================================================== GO TO http://www.prodig.org for ~ GUIDELINES ~ un/SUBSCRIBING ~ ITEMS for SALE
