Nope, just faster focusing, better off holding on to your money and buy 
a selection of 'L' series primes instead, not cheap but they are really 
cracking lenses and they also get the most out of the sensor. Just my 
two cents.

Thanks for that.

As I said in a previous post, my requirements are strictly image quality.
Ease of use, speed of use (focussing or aperature) are totally immaterial.
The camera will always be on a tripod.

So, perhaps your suggestion of a few L primes is the way to go.
