We have just added a 43 kit to our 3 23 setups. First impressions are very favourable, although I find a few things 'annoying'. The 23's work with CaptureShot 3 running in OS9. The 43 works with CaptureShot 4 running in OSX. You cannot have CaptureShot 3 and 4 on the same machine (it apparently messes up the preferences or something) which means that we have to have specific macs for each type of back. Not the ideal workflow. However I love the simplicity of the 43's firewire connection, which is fantastic on location shooting into a powerbook (although it eats batteries). > i had a few of particular concerns.... > is the sensor in the 54 as sharp as that of the 23? the 43's is, and the file size is considerably larger, so effectively once an image is sized to layout the 43's images are sharper. > is the colour different? no discernible difference, and I've mixed shots from the two cameras on the same job. > is it robust (it will only run in OS x..) I've only used the 43 so far in one shot mode and I have experienced some minor moire and colour artefact problems, but nothing that couldn't be corrected. I wouldn't expect to get any problems in 4 shot mode which is our experience with the 23's. > how noisy is it and what are the limits? cant say I've noticed any, but I have only used it at 25 ISO. > how well does a new mac cope with the huge file sizes? As with all things digital ever increasing file sizes are a way of life. The 1GHz powerbook it runs on has 1 Gig of Ram and a 60 Gig HDD. We are almost up to a terrabyte of storage on our server now, and we still have to regularly archive off to DVD.
