Thank you everyone for your suggestions which I am exploring at this moment.
However an interesting change has occurred and I am keeping my fingers crossed. Since unplugging my Wacom tablet (Graphire Ultra 2 I think) in the last 50 minutes I have been free from any crashes. Presumably there is some conflict here.
As I said previously I installed a free utilities suite called Cocktail which was recommended; it repairs permissions etc. And here is another interesting point; after running the program a couple of times it disappears off the desktop and hard disk and I have to re-install it.
