Sounds like the lab wasn't colour managed. Was it? If it was, then there should have been no problem, its no different from printing at home, all you need is an accurate profile of the printing machine in question. If they were not profiled, then "what did you expect?" Printing without a profile is always going to be hit and miss, printing with one, should be a piece of cake. I know some labs are pretty slow on getting up to date on this matter, but some, like Metro, are now fully conversant with profiling.
