I had this very same idea, with the difference that I use an EOS D60 and a 180mm Nikkor, a few months ago. Instead of stitching the files in PS I use the inexpensive PanoramaMaker, from ArcSoftware, that came with my CoolPix 4500. But before that, I used to make this "redneck multi-shot system" with a MegaVision S2 mounted, far away in time (about 5 years).
